Only The Poets Release Brand New EP 'One More Night'

Everyone’s favourite four-piece alt-pop band Only The Poets are back with their brand new EP ‘ One More Night’. - released by EMI records.

Hailing from Reading, the four-piece alt-pop band consists of Tommy Longhurst (vocals and guitars), Andy ‘Roo’ Burge (bassist), Clem Cherry (guitars) and Marcus Yates (drummer). Since releasing their debut single ‘Ceasefire’ back in 2017, the last few years have been an absolute whirlwind for the band, having gained an impressive loyal following early on which has seen them sell out multiple UK tours, supporting the likes of Louis Tomlinson, Yungblud and Tom Grennan on their UK/European dates, there is no denying that they have - rightfully so - established themselves as one the biggest emerging acts to come out of the UK Scene.

‘One More Night’ follows on from the release of the ‘Our Time EP’ and the ecstatic singles we all know and love ‘JUMP’ and a personal favourite of mine ‘Crash’. Only The Poets have carved their exhilarating sound into the essence of arenas, as frontman Tommy says “At the back of our minds we’re constantly thinking about how these songs will sound live. We really wanted to go for that big, expansive stadium filler sound” consolidating their never-ending plight for world domination.

Kicking off with the title track ‘One More Night’ a song which immediately hits us with those electrifying synths we all love, lets us reminisce about the times we’d go out and get plastered with our mates as the chorus goes “Where my heart got broken, Where I lost that fight, Where I found my purpose, Getting drunk all night, Where the world stops turning, and the sun doesn’t rise, Take me back I’m hurting” instils that all familiar feeling of wanting to escape to a place where everything feels like it’s going to be okay.

After all, it’s a song about living in the moment. Lets face it, those unknown moments where we don’t care about what we’re doing, when we look back are the ones that become the best moments of our lives. And Yes, there’s a glorious three versions of the title track, so there is no excuse never to play it! It’s one of those songs that’ll pull anyone out of a bad mood, especially when you won’t be able to help yourself from belting out the lyrics after the first verse.

However, it’s ‘Gone By Now’ that turns your head, and starts you on a journey. Giving you an insight into a relationship of conflict as evident in the lyrics “I want you to leave, I want you to stay with me’; something we can all relate to, we all have that one person we’re better off without but don’t really want to live without. Where we’re not really sure what to do; however going into ‘I don’t wanna be your friend’; a whole nother level of knowing what you want, and the intention couldn’t be any clearer that they’re better off without them, after all, “you’re only ever pulling me under”.

The one thing however I think we can all agree on, is that you can always rely on Only The Poets to tug on your heartstrings as suddenly you find yourself listening to the tearjerker that is ‘It’s Okay (Not To Be Okay)’ and while it’s a change of pace compared to the rest of the EP, it’s an imperative part. Something we can all relate to with feeling lost or in pain without others knowing. As Tommy sings: “Maybe it’s okay, Not to be okay, When we fall apart, it’s another scar, Makes us who we are’. In the end, we all have scars, and stories of when we’ve fallen but that isn’t the end, after all there’s always hope.

One More Night is an EP that solidifies Only The Poets standing on not only the UK’s music scene but the world. Especially being written on the road, there’s no doubt this is their best yet and only shows a fraction of what is yet to come. With a more mature and modern twist mixed with their catchy exhilarating iconic sound, there is no doubt Only The Poets are only just starting, they’ve laid their foundations and now they’re going for world domination whilst captivating and reminding us of the joy of what it is to be human.
