The Bedside Morale hit the ground running with their debut EP ‘Still Life’.
The Bristol indie-rock four-piece (Tim Kazer on Lead Vocals and Guitar, Charlie Dowzell on Lead Guitar, Kynan Scott on Bass, Aden Dennie on Drums and Percussion) burst onto the scene in September 2023, with their debut single ‘Safeword’ - which will feature on the EP - which saw them praised by the likes of XS Manchester, Islington Radio and Louder Than War Radio. This was soon followed up by their second single ‘Bitter Things’ in December, which was championed by Wonderland Magazine and BBC Introducing. A pretty impressive debut, right?
Having known each other as well as making music together since 2014, their close-knit bond of over a decade of life experiences and musical adventures has resulted in ‘The Bedside Moral’ a band who are realising their own identity and how they fit in the world. And after a pretty impressive debut, their EP falls short of nothing but perfection. It’s one of the best debuts I’ve heard in over a decade.
Their upcoming EP ‘Still Life’, was produced and mixed at Stage 2 Studios with Josh Gallop - who has an impressive roster of artists he’s worked with such as Mother Vulture, Krooked Tongue and Phoxjaw - is a snapshot in time of where the band begin their new musical journey.
As guitarist Charlie Dowzell says:
The lyrics are true to life and conversational in nature; We had a lot of fun exploring new themes and sounds for this EP and the reflection of honesty from within and love for our craft were the driving forces - it just so happened that the EP culminated in a freeze-frame of where we, as individuals and a collective, were at the time of writing.
With vocalist and lyricist Tim adding:
I’m trying to write more that matters to me, lyrics that I can deliver from my chest. For this EP I wanted to write songs that reflect life, or some aspect of it. Songs that are real and that are true to it. There’s moments of love and of pain and it’s all heartfelt. I think maybe I feel some sort of need to come back to authenticity and I can say, hand on whole heart, that every song here is authentically us.
‘Bitter Things’ kicks things off hard and heavy with an intense passionate melody and incredible sophistication - it’s a song that has absolutely everything you could possibly want! I mean that bassline and those vocals - it’s hard not to be drawn in within minutes. It’s infectious!
The Bedside Morale are no stranger to hiding from hard-hitting reality especially in the 4th single ‘Yours Sincerely’. A track full of emotion and completely authentic.
As frontman Tim says
I tried to not shy away from putting it to paper, or wrap it up in clever wordplay, which was hard because it meant accepting the reality of it and how little control I had. There are still some lines in this song that, if I spend too long focussing on, utterly break me.
Afterall it is a song about “trying to love, in spite of all the turmoil”.
From the very first minute of listening to The Bedside Morale, you are exposed to a sense of sophisticated heavy hitting perfection that you won’t be able to forget, and EP full of material that deserves to be shouted at the top of your lungs in crowds across the country despite remaining completely intimate.
Turning dark experiences into something of a masterpiece. If this is their debut, there is no doubt that they are going places and I’ve got a feeling that the best is yet to come! They are definitely without a doubt a band to watch and I’m very excited to see where they go. Now if you don’t mind, I’m off to listen to this on repeat and dream about the day I can hear them live!
