Fresh from the stage of Whitley Bay Playhouse supporting Tygers of Pan Tang, and kicking the 2024 festive season off with a bang supporting For the Love of Shane MacGowan at Newcastle University Students Union, Shannon Pearl is continuing to gain momentum by kicking the new year off with an instant release. Today marks her first release of the year, with much more on the way into 2025.
The self-proclaimed witch-pop pioneer is paving the way for folk music in the modern age. Her newest release - Fae Fälla - is a magical collection of short songs reminiscent of lost folk tales. Echoing ancient Scandinavian folk music, the title Fae Fälla literally means ‘Fae Trap’ in Swedish, alluding to the haunting nature of the melodies.
Intuited in the forests of northern England and brought to life in the studio, these songs are a modern take on a centuries old practice. Kulning is a vocal technique practiced in several Nordic countries, including Norway, Sweden and eastern Finland. This technique was traditionally used to call grazing animals home from their alpine pastures. Shannon Pearl began Kulning as a hobby, using the long, ornamented calls in the forests and hills; for fun, to gain the attention of birds and animals and to listen to the natural reverb her singing created within different environments. After sharing her forest shenanigans on TikTok, her kulning quickly went viral, and lo – Fae Fälla EP was born.
After a whirlwind 2024 gig season, 2025 is set to be no different - with bigger shows including a festival appearance at Northern Kin and more travelling to be done, Shannon Looks forward to more success in the coming year.
